Kundapur, Jul 6: A sexual harassment case has been booked against the village assistant from the revenue department at Gangolli near here on Monday July 6.
Umesh Kumar (38) is the person charged with the offence. A woman has complained to the Gangolli police that Umesh Kumar was sexually harassing her.
As per the details, the accused has been harassing women and girls who came to the revenue department.
Last week, a woman who had come to the village accountant’s office for some work related to ration card and caste certificate was allegedly harassed by the same person. As the village accountant was not available at the time, the accused offered to help her with the work and allegedly misbehaved and used indecent words. He also asked her to come again later in the afternoon when nobody would be around and showed her some obscene clips in his mobile phone. He asked her number and said he would visit her house.
The woman at first hesitated to file complaint against the accused fearing consequences, but managed to tell her ordeal to her family and with their help and public support, she decided to lodge a complaint in Gangolli police station on Monday July 6.
Reshma Kharvi, the gram panchayat president told reporters that the accused has been harassing women from a long time, but nobody dared to complain as it was a matter of dignity. But when the behaviour of the accused crossed all limits, everyone came together to complain.
The locals also claimed that the accused usually harassed widows and single women, and demanded stern action against him.
Umesh Kumar is married and has two children, but does not live with his wife due to marital problems. Sub-inspector B Subbanna said that it was a grave offence and he would take action immediately.
Around eighty persons including Reshna Kharvi, Edward Cardin, Mujaheed, Rosy Fernandes and others were present at the police station while the complaint was being lodged. They demanded immediate action in the case.
