Mangaluru: District taximen association to hold protest against Ola on Jul 3

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (CLP)

Mangaluru, Jul 2: Dakshina Kannada taximen and maxicab association will hold protest against mobile app-based Ola taxi service in the city on Friday, July 3. This was revealed by association president K Monappa Bhandary on July 2 in a press meet here.

A taxi rally will be held from Jyothi Circle to Nehru Maidan at 9.30 am and then protest march from Nehru Maidan to DC office.

Addressing the press Bhandary said, "Ola is not following state or central motor vehicle rules. We follow the guidelines and they are operating without mandatory permissions. We are 47 years old association and only few members from our association have joined them. Ola has affected the livelihood of hundreds of local taxi drivers and their families. So we will organize a protest tomorrow."

Addressing the press, association general secretary said, "From the last five months, Ola has been operating without local permissions. It also does not possess any city taxi permissions. They decide their own rules and fares. Ola has to come under Karnataka Motor act. we do not have problem if they have business and if they follow the rules like we do. The Ola taxi services is also not safe, as we have seen in the recent Uber rape case of Delhi. The taxi drivers run the taxies with low margin. If we allow the mobile app based taxi services, there is a great threat to our livelihood."

Airport tourist and taxi drivers association and Mangaluru travel agents association also will join the protest.

Uday Kumar treasurer, Pramod Kumar Working president of Dakshina Kannada taximen's and maxicab association were present at the press meet.

Taximen of DK, Please listen to the frustrated response from public. Have you ever seen a reaction on similar tone and tenor from public in Daijiworld for any news item in recent times? Weeks back you chased a helpless women at Mangalore Airport and successfully blocked due penal provisions. Count the likes and dislikes if you can and it will be more than the number of taxis in Mangalore. If OLA is bad, you leave it to the people of Mangalore to decide. Either you change yourselves or allow changes to take place. Remember! Change is inevitable and it shall happen, whoever oppose it, be he who he may. You are charging exorbitant fare and looting the people in day light from time immemorial. Now you want to retain that rights on perpetual lease. You have shed crocodile tears for autowallahs who too are deriving pleasure while indulging in similar activities and have, hence, lost reputation already. You want to stay together in looting the general public! You are running a monopoly business and is perpetually blocking entry of competitors by unfair means.

You either do not like the presence of a regulator in the domain. If your business is not viable, mind trying something else feasible. Let you obey the rule of nature, those unfit for survival will be eliminated without mercy. Mind! hiring taxi at a rate dictated by you is not viable to the public. Do they have the previlage to boycott your services. Let OLA Cabs and other Taxi Aggregators come and operate in the District. Let them offer even free ride to people. Why you are worried? You offer competition, if possible, else perish. Enough is enough. DK has seen hyper activism from bus lobby, taxi lobby and auto lobby with political backdoor support. Bus lobby is blocking new trains and more buses in city by KSRTC and autovallahs are blocking free permits. Finally, at end of the day, let the people too have little balance in their pocket! A satisfied society alone can provide strong foundation to a vibrant democracy!

OLA will drastically bring in changes in the lives of taxi drivers . there is a lot of investment to retain customers and every trip you are paid some incentive ..but our taxi drivers in kudla are happy to run AMBI cars screaming for passengers and waiting for hours on roads to fill the cabs ...high time they change

Very surprised to note the false allegations made by this Monappa Bhandary (is he a politician belonging to some party?) against OLA. I am a user OLA taxi service. OLA taxis, as I understand, are operated by corporate entity and I am sure they have all the necessary permissions and licenses to operate their services in Mangalore. Otherwise, the government agencies and traffic police will not allow them to operate their service. Does this Bhandary ignorant of this or he is trying to mislead the people of Mangalore?
OLA service is also operating in Bangalore city and it was learnt that they are operating approximately 10 thousand taxis/autos all over Bangalore. Can they operate in that big scale in a city like Bangalore without license and permissions? The biggest beneficiaries of OLA services are the general public be it in Bangalore or in Mangalore as their hiring charges much less than 50% of the charge of the so called taxis lead by Mr. Bhandary. Now general public is relieved that there is some alternative options people
Mr Bhandary says that OLA taxi service is not safe. With the electronic device OLA drivers movements are monitored by their central office. Customers have option to complain to their central office of their drivers misconduct. Does Monappa Bhandary’s taxi service has this facility?
The allegation of OLA’s threat to livelihood of Taxi drivers is nonsense. Let these taxi drivers reduce their fare to the level of OLA and provide the same service that of OLA, then people will use these taxis instead of OLA. Let Monappa Bhandary check the car rent charged by taxis to pickup from the Mangalore Airport to other destinations with that of the rent charged by OLA. It will be much less than 50%!!! In summary it means that the people like Monappa Bhandary who probably have vested interest in the taxi association want to deny the general public an alternative mode of transport facility which is available for less than 50% of the taxi cost??? People of Mangalore should boycott and condemn these kind of characters who are misleading the general public.

    Dear Taxiwala

We understand your concern. We are your brothers working hard in gulf counties to take care of our family, we all brought up together from same village / town, we respect you. Our only request is good & clean service with affordable rates.

See who is exploiting you, whether taxi owners who (may, I am not sure) keep 90 % of the profit or Government who impose extreme tax which you all cannot bear. Local Goondas / organisation / Union whom you have to give a portion of your hard earned money.

Avoid going to seek help from organisation who will make a big issue and big headlines on news papers but only for their benefit. At the end you are the one who earn bread fro your family, make wise decisions.

Discuss among yourself, come with the best solution, speak to intellectual people around you who will give you good suggestion which helps to earn your daily bread.

We are with you provided that you all take care of us. We love to speak Tulu or other local language with Taxiwala brothers when we travel home from Airport.

    Jai Manglore.

For everything protests, especially these Rickshaw and Taxi drivers.

When the petrol prices fallen, the city wanted to bring the minimum fare of Rik @Rs. 20, but they don't listen even DC's order.

Bus service to and from Airport/City was halted due to protest.

Now, these mafia is behind Ola taxis which are indeed economical, safe and dependable for the general public and here also these Unions are going to win, sure.

Politicians who support these auto and taxi unions are the biggest culprits and nuisance creators. If OLA is breaking law or rules it is up to the state government to act and not these goondas. If OLA is giving better service at lower cost, then customers will go for it. If it is affecting life of few taxi drivers, they should provide better service or join OLA, and not create public nuisance. When super stores came to mangalore, did it not affect lives of may small shop keepers. Some survived by giving better service and some perished. That is the nature's ion.

Please be careful with OLA they are entering the market with low rates to flush out competition and once they are monopoly they play with rates
It is better to appoint a Consumer Forum representative to decide the tariff and fix the same for both the parties

Ola will be market maker as who would not want to go in a good sedan AC car with minimum charges and on time and very clean efficient services.

Association cannot force people to use their cabs. either they have to compete or ... It is upto them. cannot force their way out and beat good service providers.

Imagine paying Rs 500 to the Ambassador non AC cab for a minimum distance and extra for luggage when one can get a super clean AC cab for half !!

Market was waiting and now that they are here, they will continue to stay. Competition is the only word for success

Why protest? Because these private taxi drivers want to charge as they wish and rob the passengers. Look at the Kankanady railway station. Here taxi and rickshaw drivers robb people during day time itself. Night you can imagine. I took Ola taxi service at Bangalore that too at night. They charged reasonably and in time service. I fully support ola group and request others too to support ola. Let taxi union people compete with ola by charging less and win the race. Taxi business runs on tariff's after taking due consideration of all running costs and rates are worked out. Why is it that Ola and other taxi services are charging tariff's which are profitable to them and local taxi men are saying that their livelihood is at stake .The simple reason is, our Mangalore taxi men don't want to work more to earn more. We are today in a digital world where healthy competition and competitive pricing and quick service matter to the customer who is king and not the operator or individual or company who can dictate terms. Local taxi's run by locals do not have GPS and tracking systems on board for security which is a must as per Operating Regulations by the Government. The association is asking for too much while they are within their rights to protest.

    WHY PROTESTS?
    IF YOU PEOPLE HAVE GUTS?
WHY DON'T YOU ALL START SAME KIND OF OLA (MOBILE APPS) TAXI SERVICE? INSTEAD OF CHARGING UP & DOWN BOTH CHARGES TO PASSENGERS AND SPENDING MONEY IN KALITTHA GADANG!
OLA IS CHARGING ONLY ONE WAY CHARGES WHEREVER YOU GO.
    TRY YOUR HAND!!!!

So Taxi Union charlie why are we concerned with your sob stories?
If we can reach home at half the cost , why not Ola?

You cannot dictate which customer goes with which Taxi?

Maintain your rust bucket cars as spick and span like they do, be as courteous as they are and charge the fares they charge and you wont have any thing to cry about.

If Ola can charge half the fares and survive in the competitive market why not you.

Monopoly days are over .Get real . Stay foolish you will stay hungry.

Nothing will work or develop in Mangalore. Ola is so convenient and cheap in Bangalore. Why can't these guys sign up and make life easier. Looking at this other companies will hesitate to expand their businesses in Mangalore. Very sad.

I agree. To develop any city there should be competition. If everyone start doing such strikes etc, it will not develop. If Taxi drivers are honest and polity and give the best service whiy people will go to OLA. Definetly not.
