Mangaluru: Booker winner Arvind Adiga donates Rs 1 crore to alma mater Canara High School

Mangaluru, Jul 1 (PTI): Man Booker prize winning author Aravind Adiga has donated Rs one crore to his alma mater, the Canara High School Association, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary.

Adiga, who did his primary and secondary education from the institution, sent the cheque to the school yesterday.

The association would utilise the money to set up endowments named after five teachers who founded the institution in 1891, Association secretary M Ranganath Bhat said in a release here.

Adiga himself volunteered to make a donation to the institution and the endowments would be used to provide free education to economically backward students studying in the institution's primary schools, Bhat said.

Adiga, now based in Australia, won the Man Booker prize in 2008 for his debut novel 'The White Tiger,' which in his own words, "attempts to catch the voice of the men you meet as you travel through India-the voice of the colossal underclass."

The novel presents a darkly humorous perspective of India's class struggle in a globalised world as told through the retrospective narration of a village boy.

Adiga was the fourth Indian-born writer to win the Booker prize after Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy and Kiran Desai.

The Canara High School Association's 125th anniversary and the new Canara English Higher Primary School was inaugurated yesterday by Harish Bhat, Group Executive Council member of Tata Sons.

Mother India is feeding her children for thousands of years. We are not living on Gulf remittances of 50-60 years.

When minorities of these countries themselves are not safe, what better can you expect for Indians.

Gulf economy is completely dependent on Petroleum which will deplete, while India is a fertile land.

Do not boast of Gulf and Middle East money. Think what happened to NRIs in countries like Iraq, Lybia, Yemen and Syria.

India may not promise riches, but is still feeding 100 crore plus population.

The Gulf countries are protected either by American army or in the midst of political turmoil. These countries may get destabilised any time and NRIs in these countries have to come back to India.

    Dear Raju Sir,

Agree, the amount (Forex) contributed by we NRIs may not be much. If annual exports amount to about 350 BUSD (recently further ped by 8%), NRI remittances are only 70BUSD (i.e. about 20% of exports - no hawala here). I agree, we NRIs who count to less than 1% of India's population could not do more than this! Our nation counts on your contributions!

    Ramesh,

I am not an economist but I do know difference between a million and a billion. While our exports are counted in millions, inflow figures in billions. Please read a quote below and understand where someone in this forum stands and where others who question their belief.

    Quote
Around 18% of the $70 billion inflow comes from United Arab Emirates Indian emigrants in the US contribute 15.88% and those in Saudi Arabia 15.40%.

There are 247 million migrants across the world, larger than the earlier estimate of 232 million. The number is expected to surpass 250 million this year.

    Exports
Exports in India increased to 22346.75 USD Million in May of 2015 from 22050 USD Million in April of 2015. Exports in India averaged 4303.66 USD Million from 1957 until 2015, reaching an all time high of 30541.44 USD Million in March of 2013 and a record low of 59.01 USD Million in June of 1958. Exports in India is reported by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India.
    Unquote

Once again, I say I am not an economist, I could be wrong. Apologies if I actually did a mistake in my assumption and seek enlightenment.

    Raju,

You are forgetting that its Indians working abroad who remitted money to contain India from economic crisis during recession that hit biggest economies of the world. I don't think you, living in a part of the nation where home political party attacks toll booths, will understand this. What, the party that earned riches out of Mills revolution did other than this for people of Maharashtra ?

You need to scroll down to see firms advertising themselves, on this website itself, and know how many of our own enter-pruners are operating in the Gulf who must be employing thousands of our citizens. To name a few, Thumbay Grop, BA Group, BRS Group, so on.

Funding to terror activities come from all sources, including our own political parties. Prove this wrong if you can !

As per some people in this forum, India's foreign exchange deficit is solved because of people working in gulf. Not because of exports. What a joke. Everyone knows that people working in gulf send money thru hawala. Some peanuts are coming thru proper channel. People are working at gulf as less as Rs.25000 per month. How much foreign exchange that they can send. what rubbish

Great example for us. People are just behind money and somewhere we find people like Adiga. Once Premji said " Dont accumulate for your children. Teach them to earn. Your money belongs to society use it for society.". Hats off to you sir, at least it will enlighten us. When the gap between poor and rich increases crime starts .So balance in the society is much important

    Sir

Big Salute, great cause, solid support. But your role will not end once you donate.
You have to get regular info/feedback about how the funds utilized.
One more thing Sir, dont just give away the amount to needy students as donation, let them payback once they benefit from this fund and start earning so this amount can be recycled for many more needy students of later generations.
    Just brain storming views
    Nonetheless great contribution

    Ibrahim,

I like your point that beneficiaries of donations/scholarships must pay back after they complete their studies and reach the earning stage.

However, that should come from within a beneficiary, a donor cannot impose such rules. For a donor, once the amount leaves his hands, he thinks his part of responsibility is over.

I feel this trend should change. Both, the donor and the receiver have done just half as much of their job upon giving/receiving. A donor must ensure (keep a tab on) his contribution - that his funds are actually used for the purpose intended and the receiver must promise to himself (and fulfill his/her promise) of uplifting the poor in ten-folds than what the original donor did.

This is the only way our generations after generations will prosper. Else, we will continue to crib as we do 'what have we achieved out of 60 plus years of independence' !

I have set a principle to myself. When somebody thanks me for a good deed, I say that you are not indebted to me but to yourself. I wish you to be in a position to help many more needy than I did, upon which only you will be relieved of your indebtedness. This make a receiver a responsible individual, not guilty. He will strive to be in a better financial state than me, not continue to beg !

@Lobo, but in reality it is not happening. People get good education in India and leave the country to work like slave in other country. They should have used their intelligence for mother country which gave them all. Once they get the degree they become selfish. Many people go to gulf and work for local firms. Which in turn make donation, which are sent to terrorists camps at pakistan. Inturn it is used by anti national elements.
