Bengaluru: Luxury car specialist online fraudsters arrested

Daijiworld Media Network- Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Jun 29: One can call them as luxury car specialists, not because they were experts in those cars. They ‘sold’ luxury cars to the customers who wanted to buy them. But the customers never received the delivery of the cars even after paying money.

8 members of online fraudsters who cheated people in the name of luxury cars have been arrested in Bengaluru on Sunday.

These fraudsters had a unique modus operandi. They took the photographs of luxury cars parked in different places. They would change the car number plates on the photos and advertise in popular selling sites like Quikr and OLX.

When someone called them enquiring about the car, one of them would say “As I am going abroad, I have parked my car at the airport. A customs officer will phone you and you can talk to her regarding the car.”

After some time a woman member of the gang acting as the customs officer would phone them. She is an expert in talking. She plays many characters. She also has many names. She would tell the caller to pay customs clearance charges by transferring to the specified account. Many people had transferred demanded amounts to the bank accounts of fraudsters believing that they would own the cars soon.

But before this gang could reach their ‘target’, Kodigehalli police managed to put a brake to their activities. Eight members of this gang were arrested on Sunday. The arrested include foreign nationals also. Police said three persons are yet to be arrested and they are on the lookout for them.

Exact amount of fraud is yet to be ascertained.

CAVEAT EMPTOR- let the buyer beware.

If anything is too good to be true, it is too true to be good.

Greed leads people to fall for these scams.
