Woman from Chitpady alleges dowry harassment, divorce notice

Udupi, Jun 12: Dr Apeksha Rao (31) from Chitpady here has filed a police complaint alleging that her husband had served divorce notice on her as she did not entertain his demand for more dowry.

The wedding of Apeksha Rao was held with Capt Abhishek R Chandavarkar in the town on May 31, 2013. Before the marriage, the groom's family had placed demand for payment of five lac rupees as dowry, out of which three lac rupees was given, Apeksha says. Apkesha claims that after marriage, she lived with Abhishek's aunt, Nina Rao, at Bengaluru before shifting residence to her husband's residential quarters in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.

'My husband, Abhishek, mother-in-law, Priya R Chandavarkar, and Abhishek's maternal aunt, Nina, used to bring pressure on me to bring in more dowry. They inflicted physical and mental torture on me. In March 2014, they used abusive language against me and my mother, and repeated their demand for dowry. In March this year, they have served divorce notice on me,' she explained in the complaint.
