Udupi: Express bus hits truck - several injured

Udupi, Jun 5: An express bus moving towards Mangaluru from the town hit a truck carrying Maggi noodles near Naraltaya shrine in Yermal Thenka near Padubidri in the taluk on Thursday June 4 evening, causing injuries to several. Injuries sustained by two persons are serious in nature, it is gathered.

The truck was carrying noodles from Goa to Mangaluru port. It is said that brakes of both the vehicles did not work properly because of wet road conditions caused by heavy rain. On national highway 66, three trucks which had developed snags, had been lined up near Yermal Tenka. The driver of the vehicle carrying the noodles saw these vehicles and turned his vehicle to the right, as a result of which, the express bus that was following it hit the truck from behind.

Michael (28), who was driving the bus, suffered grave injuries, and was admitted into a hospital in Manipal. A bus passenger named Sadananda Shetty (70) from Mulky Gundaluguttu also sustained serious injuries. Shetty's wife, Geeta Shetty, relative, Sujit Shetty, other passengers like Ganesh Thokkottu and Gayatri, who were also injured, were admitted into a private hospital in Padubidri.

The front portion of the bus was badly damaged in the accident. Padubidri police have registered a case and begun investigation.
