Mangaluru, Jun 1: Taking advantage of the fact that members of a family living opposite Bramashree Narayana Guru ITI in ninth block Katipalla had been away, thieves entered the house and stole gold ornaments valued at about two lac rupees, and around Rs 23,000 in cash.
The house in question belongs to Abdul Jaleel. The family members had left for Bengaluru to attend a marriage there on Friday night. On reaching Katipalla on Sunday morning from Bengaluru, the family was shocked to find that their house had been burgled.
The thieves used a ladder to climb the roof of the house from behind. They removed the tiles and got into the house, and took away golden chains, bangles, ear lockets, finger ring, and Rs 23,000 in cash. They then walked out of the house from the front door, which had been bolted from inside. The family had locked the back door after bolting the front door from inside, before leaving for Bengaluru.
It has transpired that the thieves sifted through all the almirahs and pulled out things to check for presence of valuables. They even checked artificial ornaments and left them behind after making sure that they were not made of gold. The complaint also says that the thieves used a motor bike key left inside the house to unlock the motor bike parked outside. They then went around in the motor bike before leaving the motor bike in the verandah with the key in the ignition lock of the two-wheeler.
In all likelihood, the theft would have occurred on Friday night, it is being surmised. On Saturday evening, a family living in the neighbourhood had informed the police that the front door of the said house was ajar. However, the policemen who visited the spot, went back, as house owners were not present.
Suratkal police visited the spot after receipt of the complaint, and registered a case.
