Mangaluru, May 27: M Purushotham Kottary, president of civil contractors association conducted a press meet regarding cessation of sand supply and said that excessive sand export to other district and state should be stopped, at press club on Wednesday, May 27.
Kottary said, “Sand is a main row material for construction. It was extensively and easily available. But in the past few months there is a shortage of sand as sand is transported to various districts and interstates. It is permitted by the district administration. Every day about 300 trucks filled with 20 to 25 tons of sand is transported to other districts and states. About 6,000 to 8,000 ton of sand is transported every day. This has resulted in shortage of sand to the contractors of our district”.
“There has been opposition in the meeting from all the contractors of our association and we have decided to create awareness about the consequences of reckless sand mining from the deep river. The impact on the ecological balance would lead to many more problems in future. In this regard, government and district administration should take corrective measures and stop transporting sand to other districts and states. The decision should be taken by the district administration. If not our association will conduct a massive protest”.
Dinkar Suvarna, vice president, Devananda, secretary, Ashok Kulal, joint secretary, Suresh , treasurer of civil contractors association were present during the press meet.
