Kundapur, Apr 4: The work on solid waste dumping yard unit at Kandavara near Kundapur was opposed by the localites.
The work was started on the direction of district administration to provide a permanent solution to the solid waste disposal.
Basrur Zilla Panchayat Member Devananda Shetty, Taluk Panchayat President Jyothi V Puthran, Koni Gram Panchayat President Diwakara Shetty, JD (S) leader Jagadish Yadiyala and others staged protest in front of Revenue sub-division officer against the on going work on the dumping yard.
After the formation Town Municipal Council, no permanent place was identified for the disposal of solid wastes in Kundapur. In the last 5 to 6 years, the wastes was being disposed at Gangolli Kaluvina baagilu, shores of Aanaglli river near Sangam, on either sides of NH 17. This was posing threat to the water bodies in the region.
A case had been filed in the court for flouting CRZ clause for disposing solid waste at Sangam. Though Town Municipality Council and district administration had identified several places for the dumping yard unit, there were stiff opposition from the members of the public and people’s representatives.
Recently after the district administration identified land in Kandavara for setting up solid waste dumping yard unit, the villagers have started opposing by urging the villagers not to dispose the waste in the identified site.
Inspite of the resistance from the public, the district administration which was firm on its decision to have dumping yard unit had conducted survey in 15 acres of land at the survey no 178 179 183 and 151. With the police security, the work on the unit was kicked off on Monday.
The villagers staged a protest and submitted a memorandum to Revenue sub-division officer Prabhakar Sharma against the on going work of dumping yard.
