Udupi, May 19: Vishalakshamma, a 62-year-old widow hailing from weavers' community, who was cheated of her property by her own son, has finally obtained justice.

Addressing a press meet here on Monday May 18, Dr Ravindranath Shanbhag of Human Rights Protection Foundation, Udupi, said that Vishalakshamma was living at Gottagere, Bengaluru, and was cheated by her son Prashant Kumar (24).

"She had owned two houses - one was in her late husband’s name and another was in her own name. Her son Prashant Kumar, without her knowledge, had transferred all the property into his name in 2007 and 2009. After his marriage, he forcibly asked her to leave the house. She was then forced to go to an old age home in Bengaluru," said Dr Shanbhag.

"In 2013, she had given a complaint to assistant commissioner of senior citizen tribunal seeking re-possession of her houses. The court was supposed to give its verdict in 90 days but it took a long 369 days. Meanwhile, she went to 27 different departments, seeking justice, but all she got was humiliation in all of them," he added.

The Human Rights Foundation then came to her aid. Ravidra Shanbhagh sent a case history letter to minister for women and child development Umashree on April 23, 2015, pleading on her behalf.

Shanbagh received an answer from the women and child welfare department (WCWD). As per the letter, the complainant had to wait for 20 days for sorting out the case. Surprisingly, on Saturday May 16, Dr Shanbhag got a mail from Ruhini Sapat, deputy police commissioner, Bengaluru. She had ordered 'requite all her property from her son Prashanth under police protection'. The order further said that the volunteers of HR Foundation would be staying with her as a matter of safety. Vishalakshamma now waits for the execution of order, said Shanbhag.

"Principal secretary Rajaneesh Koyal, Mohan Kumar of WCWD and department of senior citizens empowerment director Jayanna supported me a lot in sorting out the legal problems," said Vishalakshamma.

Vishalakshamma alleged, "My son, Prashant Kumar, looted me of Rs 1.5 lac and gold ornaments worth Rs 50,000. The site was granted by the government. Three-fourth of the house is let on rent. In one room, Prashant has his travel agency office, but it is only for name sake. He is getting nearly Rs 10,000 per month as rent for his alleged travel agency. I will forgive him but I am not ready to live with him."

HR Foundation president said that it was a good sign that she has regained all her property. "Recently, I had settled four such domestic problems and resolved it in one day. Two of these cases were from Udupi," he informed.

Fighting the enemy within the family is the sad part of our lives. There are so many parents who are tricked by their own flesh and blood. Some keep quiet and some seek help but thanks to people who come forward to fight their cases and do whatever possible. May there be many more helpers like Dr Shanbhag.

Dear Ravindranath Shanbaug, My sincere appreciation and hats off to your determination and social work. There are very few people in this world who feel for under privileged and aged people. You are on shinning star among them. May god Bless you abundantly and keep you in good health so that you get to help many more destitute mothers/fathers from their children cheating them. My heartiest appreciation to Women Welfare Minister Madam Umashree for quickly responding to this case and directing the relevant authorities to take up this case. Good job from the Government Side too.

Don't ever keep any 'property' for the sake of childrens.

Let them earn of there 'own' and learn to live in the society in there capacity.

Give as much education to the children's and encourage them now and then during pursuing there goal.

'Property' itself is main cause for all the disputes.

My recent visit to India I closely observed the shortage of workers in every field. Only lazy persons are unemployed and complaining about expensive laborers . Every young person should work & purchase their own land and property. Manage with what little they have.Parents responsibility towards their children should end upon Children complete schooling or reach adult hood. Parent should enjoy their property by using it, selling it or donating to red cross or similar well managed non profit organizations. We need cultural change in our thoughts. We should not make our children defendants on parents.

Bro, the shortage is more endemic out in DK as most of the populace here prefer to go abroad for greener pastures even when the things on the incentives front has increased here considerably!! They would not mind working for measly salaries by paying as much as 1 years salary as commision to the recruiting agents, this is the fashion and trend!! This has caused a shortage of skilled/unskilled labor, which is filled in by outsiders hence the heavy influx of people from other states where there is dearth of employment oppurtunities!!

Secondly, due to land prices going up through the roof those having inherited even 20 cents land would dispose off half of it and get in crores which is enough for him to survive without doing any work!!

Many people here are in the finance, leasing, gold loan, pyramid scheme, brokerage business and are doing well!!

Farmers have converted their paddy fields to areca fields, which fetches them very handsome 'tax free' profits!!

Purchasing land and flats now is beyond the capacity of even the upper middle class due to rampant increase in rates by the realty mafia!! A middle class person having a middle management job, how can he even garner money nearing crore to buy a house of his own unless he is lucky to have a high paying job or access to under-the-table income?

It is so sad that this mother who gave birth and nursed this son has to go through the nightmare. I still can not believe how our own flesh and blood can revolt against the parents and throw them out of the house when they should be supporting them in their old age. Blessed is this mother who got timely help Mr. Shanbhag and got her property back. In spite of what the son did to her, she is still willing to forgive this devil as god alone knows what other wicked plans he has in store.

Excellent job sir. We need people like you especially to help senior citizens cheated by their own children. In one day we read 2 articles, in one son stabbed his mother to death! and in this news son cheated his mother! Now a days because of the property prices parents are betrayed by their own children. I don’t think girls can be excluded in this.
