Puttur: Businessman files complaint after fake emails claim he's stranded

Puttur, May 17: Email hackings are not uncommon these days. But police complaints are rarely lodged about them due to lack of awareness. In this case, K Vishwas Shenoy, a businessman and vice president of Puttur town co-operative bank has lodged a police complaint about the hacking of his email.

As per the complaint lodged, Shenoy’s email account has been hacked and messages have been sent from it saying Shenoy has been stranded in London and he needs help.

‘Please send me US $ 1500 to come back to India’ the email messages say. An Western Union account number to which the money can be sent is specified in the email.

Puttur town police with the help of cyber police have started the investigation. Meanwhile Shenoy does not know how many people have received the emails. He has stopped using the particular email account. He is telling as many people as possible not to respond to the mail sent by conmen. It is not yet known how many people have sent money to London.

    Generally this type of job is done by Nigerians all over the world...many Nigerians in India are doing back office job for this...Police should find out account holder and arrest him...most likely he/she sitting in Nigeria...Boko Haramis...

    Hacking of emails ID's is quite common. The fake messages have been going round often after the the password has been stolen by miscreants.

    Hope the police will be able to trace the culprit and book him

    Daiji, please publish the after events of the filing of complaint so that all of us will know what to do when we have to face such situa ttions.Last year I also got a mail saying that my colleague was stranded in UK.she was on leave that time.Then I called her mobile no.which was not responding. I had to call her brother where my colleague was. He said she is not well and at home.When I told him about the email I received, he said many people got the same e-mail and there were many phone calls enquiring about her. Luckily we did not have that much money that time. Otherwise we would have been duped.

    One of my friends in Oman was about to get trapped in a fake employment offer this week. He received an offer letter by the name of Petrofac Oil & Gas and was asked to pay USD 1450/- through Western Union transfer for his visa and other documentation, with a promise to refund the money within a week after his arrival to UAE. He had some doubts about the offer. So he contacted me to verify the details. When I contacted Petrofac office in Abu Dhabi it was found to be fake. They have received many such complaints and have initiated action. I tried to contact the persons who sent the offers and emails, but they did not answer phones.
