Mangaluru, May 12: A car accident at Tannirbavi road here on Tuesday May 12 claimed the lives of two young persons.
The deceased have been identified as Tasheel (21), son of Mohammed Rafiq, a resident of Falnir, and Prineeta Suvarna from Karwar, who was staying at her grandmother's house in Balmatta here.
They were driving in an Hyundai i20 car when the accident took place.
They were driving from Kulur towards Tannirbavi beach when the car went out of control and veered off the road and fell into the river, killing both of them. It is said that the accident happened when Tasheel was overtaking another vehicle.
The car was being driven recklessly at a high speed which caused the accident, police sources said. People from IOC who were stationed nearby phoned and informed the police about the accident. The police with the help of fire brigade, sand labourers and locals participated in the rescue operation.
The car doors could not be opened for rescue purposes as they were locked. The glasses of the car were broken to take out the bodies from the car. The central locking system is blamed for this. In manual system, the doors would open in such cases.
Normally in case of small accidents, the footpath, which is around one and half feet above the road, acts as a barricade. A big tree near the accident spot and also some other small trees in between the sea and road also could have stopped the car from falling into the river. But the speed of the car was such that, it crossed these hurdles and ended up in the river.
The car was later fished out of the river with the help of a crane. The bodies were also recovered.
Prineeta was pursuing PU studies through correspondence while Tasheel had finished his graduation and was running a business, sources said.
