Mangaluru, May 10: The deputy commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada has informed all the concerned that there will not be any movement of trucks carrying sand on Charmadi ghat road from May 9 to June 8.

The DC has said that this is a temporary as well as a trial measure to see how the ban would help to ease up the traffic on Charmadi ghat road.

After the closure of Shiradi ghat for vehicular traffic, Charmadi ghat has been used by vehicles as a substitute road. Added to this, the presence o f trucks carrying sand had added extra pressure on the movement of traffic. Hence there was a demand to ban truck carrying sand on this road for months now. And it is also feared that presence of these trucks will also damage the road further.

The issue was discussed many times in various meetings witnessed by the Dc.

Police superintendent had also requested the DC to put a ban on these trucks.

The ban is believed to help to curb the illegal sand mining in the area to some extent.
