Mangaluru: DC briefs about preparations for gram panchayat elections

Mangaluru May 7: In view of the gram panchayat (GP) elections scheduled to be held across the state, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim held a press meet here at DC office in Mangaluru on Thursday, May 7.



Addressing the media he explained about various arrangements made for the elections and said "Elections will be held on May 29. This time there is a 50 percent reservation for women candidates. We are not using electronic voting machines (EVMs) in this election here. Instead poll box method will be used. Nominations can be filed from May 11 to May 18 with the respective ellection officer or assistant election officer. May 21 will be the last day to withdraw the nominations. In order to conduct the election irrespective of party lines, the contestants can take the list of available symbols from election officer and mention any 3 symbols. symbols will be allocated on the priority basis. Code of conduct will be applied from May 10,"

"Elections will be held in 55 Gram panchayats of Mangaluru, 57 gram panchayats of Bantwal, 46 gram panchayaths of Belthangady, 41 gram panchayaths of Puttur and 28 gram panchayats of Sullia. Total 227 gram panchayaths. Total voters in Mangaluru Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur, Sullia Gram pancchayat are 31056, 270787,195895,177095, 95908 respectively. Total number of male voters is 5,24,597 and the total number of female voters is 5,28,144 with the total number of voters in 5 taluks standing at 10,52,741. Total number of service voters who are in government service is 859," the DC added.

Total number of polling booths is 1309. The number of polling booths in Mangaluru, Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur, Sullia gram panchayath are 391, 341, 234, 221, 122 respectively. 227 polling booths are identified as sensitive and 204 polling booths have been termed as very sensitive. Selection of 229 election officers and 249 assistant election officers has been already done. The Male contestants who contest in the election have to deposit Rs 200 and female conditions have to deposit Rs 100, DC revelaed.

ADC Sadashiv Prabhu, ZP CEO Shree Vidya, AC Dr Ashok and others were present at the press meet.
