B'luru: Agricultural economist Prof V M Rao dead

Bengaluru, May 2: Noted agricultural economist Prof V M Rao, a senior visiting professor at the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) died in Bengaluru on Friday.

He was 85. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Prof Rao is a distinguished agricultural economist and an expert on poverty and rural development issues.

He had served as a Member of the Commission on Agricultural Costs and Prices, Government of India (1991-95). He was president-elect of the 51st Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics in 1991 and served as a Member and Head of some of the crucial policy bodies.

Prof Rao has published over 100 papers in reputed academic journals including the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Indian Journal of Agricultural Economics (IJAE), and Economic and Political Weekly, apart from over 14 books/monographs.

He also was the Chairman of the Editorial Board of IJAE from 2000 to 2004. He was affiliated to ISEC as an Honorary Visiting Professor till death.
