Kundapur, Apr 23: Women of the taluk and activists under the banner of 'Makkala Mitraru' organized a protest here on Wednesday April 22, and submitted petition to the assistant commissioner and police circle inspector, demanding stringent punishment to those behind the ghastly and inhuman act of rape and murder of Indira Mogaveera, a pregnant woman from Beejady Charkikadu near here.
The women, 'Makkala Mitraru', and personnel of Concerned for Working Concerned for Working Children (CWC) went in a procession from Shastri Circle here to the office of the assistant commissioner on Wednesday, and urged the officials to take necessary steps to ensure that the incidents of this kind never recur in the taluk, and to take all necessary steps so that the guilty are punished with maximum sentence.
They wanted the government to take into account the issues which were raised at Gram Sabhas which were specifically organized in September 2014 to discuss the matter of protection of women and children from all kinds of exploitation, and to take remedial steps that are required for stop such crimes from happening.
The participants of the procession also demanded to take strict action and stop sale of illicit liquor, which has been the root cause for many of such crimes. 'Police beats should be arranged on regular basis at strategic places and mass contact meetings should be arranged often. The officials should look into the allegation that two more were involved with the said incident in which a pregnant woman lost her life,' they stated.
Assistant commissioner, Charulata Somal, and circle inspector, Diwakar, received the petitions. Prabhavathi Shetty, Philomena, Raveendra Dodmane, Devi Golihole and activists of 'Namma Bhoomi' were present.
