London, Apr 21: Veteran actress Shabana Azmi is said to have joined the cast of 'Capital' a show being done and soon to be aired by BBC One, which is based on the novel by John Lanchester's bestselling novel of the same name.
Categorised as a mini-series, Capital has Toby Jones, Lesley Sharp, Wunmi Mosaku, Adeel Akhtar, Rachael Stirling, Gemma Jones, Robert Emms, Bryan Dick and Radoslaw Kaim all signed up to be its cast. Shabana (64) who is currently in London shooting for the same, tweeted, "Here is what I am filming in London for. Toby Jones, Emma Jones, Adeel Akhtar all BAFTA nominees. Euros Lynn directs." She had also tweeted her reaction her first day there with, "It's the first time ever that I've stepped into a production where I do not know a single person in the unit. Feel like a newcomer."
The show is said to be conceptualised around the unprecedented growth of property prices and subsequent transformation of one South London street. It is planned to be aired as three episodes - each to be an hour in length. Award winning screen writer Peter Bowker is reported to have adapted the story to suit the episode length and style.
Speaking to the BBC, Bowker told them, "Capital is a novel that is about the way we live in modern cities, where poverty lives cheek by jowl with dazzling affluence and where tradition and modernity clash and coexist. It is both a mystery and a love story. The challenge has been to retain all those elements along with the spirit of the original — a kind of comic outrage — while using John's cast of fascinating, funny and disparate characters, to explore our relationship with money."
