Mangaluru, Apr 20: On Sunday late afternoon, several parts of the state's coast received good rain coupled with thunder and lightning. Untimely rain created problems for the people, damaged buildings and disrupted some programmes. It also brought welcome relief from summer heat, which had picked up intensity since the last couple of days.
This is the season of annual festivals, religious and cultural programmes in temples here. These programmes were affected to some extent, and participants of these programmes were caught unawares by the sudden rain, and were compelled to either drench or take shelter in buildings as they were without umbrellas.
Good rainfall was reported from Beltangady, Moodbidri, Puttur, and some other parts of Dakshina Kannada district. As branches of trees fell over power lines at a few places, power supply was affected. The average rainfall was of about an hour's duration.
Mulky, Kinnigoli, Suratkal etc received drizzle. The city, Bantwal, Vittal, and some other places experienced cloudy weather and thunder, and people living in these places expected to get rain but were disappointed as the expectation was dashed.
Four houses in Shirtady near Moodbidri were damaged due to heavy wind and rain which lashed the area on Sunday evening. A fallen coconut tree at Durga in Karkala taluk inflicted loss to the tune of Rs 30,000 on an Anganwadi building.
The meteorologial department has predicted rainy weather with thunder and lightning to continue for three to four days more in the coastal area and southern inland area of the state. It said a couple of places in northern inland areas may also get rain with thunder during this period.
