Bahrain, Mar 10: An Indian widow, whose Bahraini husband died 13 years ago, has sought the Indian Embassy's assistance to continue to stay in the Gulf country.

The Embassy officials have reportedly assured Aisha Kunipurayil, 60, that they would approach Bahraini authorities to inquire about her BD50 monthly pension benefits, which she claims were stopped four months ago.

Kunipurayil first came to Bahrain 22 years ago, as the new wife of Mohammed Khamis Ahteya.

"When I came, I didn't think about renewing my passport and in 1993 it expired," she said.

"When my husband died 13 years ago, I started getting a monthly BD50 pension from the government. Because I have been in Bahrain for 22 years, I decided to apply for a Bahraini passport four months ago. I was then told that I had to renew my Indian passport before I could apply for Bahraini citizenship and then the pension stopped coming," she was quoted as saying in a media report.

Kunipurayil's daughter from her first marriage, Waheeda, is putting up in Bahrain.
