Mangaluru, Apr 17: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, said that all works relating to the exit road being newly laid at the airport will be completed by May end, and the road will be opened for the public during June.

He gave this information after conducting progress review of the road at a meeting held at the auditorium of his office on Thursday April 16.

He noted that Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd has been executing this work. 'Out of the total length of 1,125 metre road, 740 metres will be concrete road, and the balance, asphalted one. One side of the road will have protective wall. Departments concerned have been asked to shift electric poles and drinking water pipes that presently exist on this stretch to help timely completion of the road,' he explained.

He also added that an alternative road for use during emergencies will be shortly built at a cost of about Rs 1.90 crore, in addition to the present roads meant for incoming and outgoing traffic. The new road will be laid between Maravoor panchayat office to the airport, and tender process of this work is in progress now, he explained.

'Regarding the need to extend the present runway of the airport from 8,000 feet to 13,000 feet, 84 acres of land have to be acquired. Out of this, 23 acres of land is already in the possession of the government, and survey for the balance 61 acres has been completed. Once this proposal gets nod from the state cabinet, land acquisition process will begin,' said assistant commissioner.
