Udupi, Mar 2: In an untoward incident locals attacked Nagarjuna officials at Thottam near Thenka Yermal here before destroying some of the important documents on Thursday March 1.
Balachandra, the technical director of the Nagarjuna had gone to Thottam along with Girish Navada and few other officials for conducting survey regarding pipeline for the project. They had gone to the spot on three vehicles. As they started their work, a few locals came to the spot and enquired about their whereabouts.
When the officials revealed their identity and purpose of their arrival, the locals snatched some important file and burnt them. They also damaged the glass of one of the vehicles. Meanwhile more people started gathering on the spot leading to tension in the area.
Soon the news reached Padubidri inspector Navinchandra Jogi. He along with Manipal circle inspector H D Mendoca visited the spot and took control of the situation.
The first phase of survey work for the proposed Nagarjuna power plant is almost completed. However, survey work for establishing pipeline to fetch water for the project from the sea is yet to be undertaken and the officials are said to have gone to Thottam in this regard.
