Bantwal, Apr 1: At the general session of the municipal council held here on Tuesday March 31, councillors in unison were seen turning their ire at the deputy commissioner (DC) of the district for not showing interest in tackling the garbage disposal problem faced by the town administration. The environment was so hotted up that at one stage a proposal was mooted to curtail the meeting midway and stage protest against the DC in front of his office.
The session was presided over by president, Vasanti Chandappa. When taking up approval of the minutes of the previous meeting, the councillors noted that the DC wasyet to give administrative sanction for the proposal to call for tenders to set up waste processing unit. During the discussions, councillors said that a special meeting had been held as per the instructions of the DC for the purpose and a decision was taken. They felt that even after 15 days of sending the decision taken at the meeting to call for tender, the DC had not given administrative sanction, which gives an indication that he was in favour of setting up waste processing unit here. Some members even felt that mining and land mafia was working behind this delay.
Although standing committee formation has been put off since the last two meetings, and it was again put up in Tuesday's meeting, the issue remained in limbo. Even though BJP councillors like Govind Prabhu and Devadas Shetty remained adamant on the stand to complete the exercise now itself, sensing that ruling councillors were not in favour of it, president announced that this issue has been put off indefinitely.
Some other issues including the recently presented budget came up for discussion. Vice president, Yasmeen, chief officer, Leena Britto, and others were present.
