Mangaluru, Mar 30: The Department of Urology and Renal Transplantation, A J Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre conducted a scientific programme on 'Management of early prostate cancer'at A J Hospital and Research Centre, Mangaluru on Sunday, March 29.
Cancer of the prostate, once considered a disease of the elderly male is now increasingly detected in middle age, 45-60 years, thanks to social awareness and newer diagnostic modalities. Early diagnosis and modern treatment modalities have resulted in high cure rates. The meet, presided by A J Shetty, Chairman, Laxmi Memorial Group of Institutions, included several prominent Urologists like Prof. P. Venugopal from Mangaluru, Prof. Deepak Dubey from Bengaluru, Dr. Arun Chawla from Manipal and others. Newer modalities of treatment like Robotic Prostate surgery were discussed.
The take home message was to spread awareness among males between 45 and 60 years, and include screening for high risk groups. Early diagnosis and rational treatment results in high cure rates.
