Mangaluru: Nitte - Pioneering revolution in education since 1979

Mangaluru, Mar 30: One sunny morning in the year 1979, in a quiet village in coastal Karnataka, a school was born. A small school with a big dream – to extend to students education in the English medium. Little did the world know that this school would one day grow in stature and encourage the birth of several institutions of excellence.

It has been 35 years since and Nitte has grown to include colleges of engineering, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, allied health, management, communication and hotel management. Recognition came in the form of the A Grade by NAAC. Nitte has also been placed under Category A by MHRD, government of India.

The school in Nitte was followed by schools in Thokur and Bengaluru. Engineering college NMAMIT - which incidentally attracts some of India’s best-known companies for placements - with the Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology in Bengaluru, and the Management Institute with the School of Management, also in Bengaluru.

The sprawling 120 acre campus in Nitte was followed by campuses in Mangaluru and Bengaluru. First grade colleges were born to bring underprivileged students into the mainstream.

To keep up with the growing demand for media professionals, the Nitte Institute of Communication - the youngest member of the Nitte family - was born in September 2012. The Institute offers bachelors/masters in communication and is the only institute in South Canara to offer a graduate programme in communication. The Institute also has a multi-camera studio where students learn to film, record, edit and understand the basics of short-film making.

To encourage meritorious students, Nitte has instituted scholarships in various disciplines. Students can avail of it and obtain a concession in annual fees.

Nitte in Healthcare

Nitte’s foray into healthcare began in 1985, with the birth of AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences. Today the college is ranked among the top 10 dental colleges in the country.

In 1999 was born the K S Hegde Medical Academy and the 1200-bed K S Hegde teaching hospital. The multi-specialty hospital with super-specialty departments reaches out to the rural public around Mangaluru.

January 2013 saw the setting up of the 70-bed hospital at Karkala – Nitte-Gajaria. Rural health centres – 20 in number - are also a part of Nitte Healthcare. Working towards what Nitte has believed in all along – that India lives in its villages.

With 3 campuses, 3,500 faculty, 88 disciplines, 17,000 students, Nitte University is one of the youngest and the most popular universities in South India.
