Mangaluru, Mar 28: The ninth annual sports meet of St Aloysius B Ed College was conducted on the Centenary Grounds here today. Raymond D’Souza, former Mr World was the chief guest.
The athletic meet began with the splendid march-past led by the four sports groups, namely, Shivaji, Nethaji, Nehru and Bhagath to the beat of the band. Ranjitha, sports secretary, received the college flag from the principal Dr Farita Viegas. She then handed it over to the four flag bearers Fr Paul Crasta (president-students council), Shivaraj (vice-president, students council), Shais and Athief to begin the march-past. The chief guest received salute from each group during the March-past.
The chief guest inaugurated the meet by hoisting the college flag. Thereafter the torch ceremony was conducted to promise to burn and emit light in society by being men and women for others.
The chief guest, in his address invited the athletes to inculcate a sports spirit and practice it in everyday life. He also stressed on not to give up hope when life meets with failure.
Fr Denzil Lobo, rector- St Aloysius College Institutions presided over the function. He highlighted the significance given to physical education and sports in Jesuit Educational Institutions for the all round development of students personality.
Fr Michael John, director of the B Ed college threw light on the weak attitude developed by people towards games due to the influence of electronic gadgets and other amenities of life. He emphasized to develop a positive attitude towards sports in order to have a sound mind in a sound body.
The chief guest and the rector acknowledged the winners of carom, chess, badminton, volleyball and throw-ball by awarding certificates and medals during this occasion. Fr Michael John then honoured three winners who had participated in the inter B. Ed collegiate athletic meet held at Mangalore University.
Dr Farita Viegas, principal, delivered the welcome address. Jerome D’ souza, lecturer, announced the winners list. Santhosh Furtado, sports convener, delivered the vote of thanks. Michel Rodrigues (student trainee), compered the programme. The inaugural programme ended with the display of an impressive mass PT exercise. Track and field events were conducted. Tug of war was an attractive event in the meet.
