Mangaluru, Mar 27: In connection with the case in which 30 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 8 lac in cash were robbed from a person moving on a motor bike from near the new over bridge at Chokkabettu on December 23, 2014, the police have succeeded in recovering the gold ornaments. The ornaments so recovered were produced in the court.
A gang comprising Nazeem Hafiz (25) from Iddya Guddekopla Suratkal, Raja alias Japan Manga (24) from Kavoor, Shabbir (28) from Deralakatte, Shamir Hamza alias Hamza (31) and Muhammed Asif (24) from Janata Colony in Kana were identified as culprits involved with this robbery.
Out of the ornaments robbed, the accused had delivered gold ornaments worth about Rs 5 lac to a jewellery merchant from Gurpur. The ornaments were recovered from the jeweller. It is said that Hafiz used to work as the main person through whom Hawala money transacted by the owner of a super market in Chokkabettu was being transported. He was removed some months back after finding his conduct to be not good, and another person, Muhammed Sharin, had been appointed in his place.
Hafiz, who had full knowledge of these transactions, had formed a group through which he intercepted the motor bike being driven by Muhammed Sharin, and robbed him of the ornaments and cash he was transporting. It is gathered that Hafiz has confessed to his crime.
