Beltangady, Mar 23: Bommi (46) from Darkhas House in Bandaru village in the taluk drowned in Balamuri rivulet that drains into River Netravati, when washing clothes near her home. The tragedy occurred on the evening of Saturday March 21.

Her family members were busy with erecting pandal in the courtyard of her house by using poles and coconut fronds, for the proposed engagement function of her daughter scheduled for Wednesday.

As Bommi was not seen for long, her husband Krishnappa Gowda went searching for her. After watching a bundle of clothes on the bank of the rivulet, he grew suspicious and tried to search for her by using his fishing line. At a considerable depth, the fishing line got stuck to her clothes, after which he pulled her body out, it is learnt.

Initially there were doubts that Bommi would have been pulled away by a crocodile that had been sighted at this spot sometime back. However, her body did not bear any marks created by the biting of the crocodile. Therefore, it is thought that she would have slipped and fell into the rivulet when washing clothes.

A case was filed at Uppinangady police station relating to the incident.
