Udupi, Mar 15: ‘World Women’s Day’ was celebrated by district and Taluk Mahila Mandali Okkoota, Udupi, in association with Zilla Panchayat, Udupi, Women and Children Development Department, Udupi, Sri Krishna Math Paryaya Sri Kaniyur Math, Udupi, Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, Human Rights Rashtriya Okkoota, and Srishakti Sanga Okkuta’, on Saturday March 14.
A rally was organized from the Clock Tower to Rajangangana and Sheela K Shetty led the women’s awareness rally.
Savitha S Kotian, president, Zilla Panchayat, after inaugurating the programme, said, “A woman is power. She plays many roles the domestic arena as well as outside.
Now, the prevention of women’s harassment stands as a big challenge. Nowadays domestic violence has crossed its limits. There is need to enforce tough punishment and fight in a united manner.”
Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj said, “Women are developed in all fields. A woman handles the entire family along with her husband. There is 50 percent reservation in both village and taluk panchayats. The village panchayat election is near and will be held on May 8, 2015. There is a lack of a strong woman political contestant.” He added that he was expecting more articipation from women in the next election.
“In addition to this, the revolving fund (Avartha Nidhi) has been raised from Rs 5, 000 to Rs 25,000. Chief minister (CM) Siddaramaiah had declared free rice for BPL card holders as well as rice and wheat for APL card holders - 10 kg for Re 1. The amount of loan has been increased from Rs 1, 00,000 to Rs 2, 00, 000 for SHGs. The monthly payment to Anganwady teachers and workers has been increased by Rs 500 and Rs 250, respectively,” he added.
Sheela K Shetty, president, Taluk Mahila Mandali Okkoota, read the decisions and took oath to fight against violence on women. She urged the extension of the Santhvana office and to grant special powers to the senior citizens helpline. Sri Shakti Sangatan President Rati Kanchan and Jayanti Barkur were felicitated by Mahila Okkoota.
The programme began with an invocation. Sarala Kanchan, president, District Mahila Mandali Okkoota, welcomed the gathering.
Veronica Cornelio, chairperson, Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited, Yuvaraj, CMC President, Mallika Balakrishna Bannanje, ZP member, Gracy Gonslwis, Rajendra Bekal, Inna Uday Kumar Shetty, and Indira Shetty were present on the occasion.
