Puttur, Feb 8: "Despite a large number of people criticizing the stringent methods carried out by police in Puttur on Saturday February 3 during the Shani puja, I personally feel that this was needed to control some persons who were trying to ignite the communal riots in the name of religion. If we had not controlled the situation then too the blame would have been on us that we did not respond to the situation. We want to convey a strong message to all those who are waiting to stir communal feelings for their selfish motives that they would be dealt with strict measures," said Western Range IGP H N Satyanarayana.
He was speaking to reporters here on Wednesday February 7 after taking stock of peace, law and order measures in the town.
He said that it is absolutely not wrong to hold religious functions, rituals in a democratic set up. But if anyone tries to pose problem for law and order, then, those activities need to be curbed right at the beginning. He added that the department had not stalled the organizations from holding religious rites and rituals in front of the Shri Mahaligeshwara Temple. But when they proceeded with procession for which prior permission was not obtained, the department objected.
"Using this opportunity some of the leaders delivered provocative speech and also tried to defame the department. They had actually intended to create communal problems in the town which we did not allow," he opined.
Though some of the accused have been arrested so far, most of them are absconding. However, the police have sought the help of inter-state police to nab these too. "So far no case has yet been registered against Pramod Mutalik. But this is not end of everything. His role in the entire incident will be viewed and further action will be taken," he added.
