Mangaluru, Mar 10: Different parts of Dakshina Kannada district and Karkala taluk in Udupi district continued to get rainfall on Monday March 9. Many places got rain coupled with lightning and thunder.
In an incident that occurred at Kolapalu in Perla near Ujire on Monday March 9 evening, a labourer died on the spot, and four others suffered serious injuries, after lightning struck. The deceased has been identified as Surendra (25), son of Anni Poojary from Ballidadda Hosamane in Shirlalu. Rajesh (27) from Pilya village, Harish (30) from Shirlalu, Ratnakar (52) from Shirlalu, and Vijay (35) from Shirlalu suffered critical injuries. All these labourers, who were working in a construction site nearny, had rushed under a shed to get shelter from the rain which suddenly poured. Lightning however, struck that shed. While Rajesh was rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru, the other three were admitted into Benaka Hospital in Ujire.
Good rain with lightning and thunder was received in Kadaba, Uppinangady, Puttur, Nelyady, Sullia, Dharmasthala, Beltangady etc. Subrahmanya accounted for some rain. Roofs of several houses near Kadaba were damaged, and a number of areca nut, coconut, and rubber trees got uprooted.
Maddadka and Mulleria got rain. Karkala reported good rainfall, while Mala, Hosmar, Edu, Hebri etc experienced some rainfall.
Dharward received highest rainfall of 9 cm in the entire state. The meteorological department has predicted thunder coupled with rains at different parts of the state including the coast. This prediction is valid till Wednesday morning.
