Bantwal, Mar 7: The taluk committee for social justice has asked Dakshina Kannada district administration to immediately remove mobile phone towers located in the vicinity of schools, colleges and also residential areas.
This demand was made in a protest organized under the leadership of the committee in front of the taluk office here on Friday March 6. The protesters particularly demanded for the removal of mobile towers standing near CBS Vidyagiri English Medium School in the town.
Presidenn of the committee, Krishna Alsipade, who inaugurated the movement to pool people's opinion against these towers, which has been supported by various social organizations, called upon the people to be sensitive to the issue of radiation from these towers causing ill-affects on the health of young students.
Treasurer of the committee, Abubakker Ammunje, warned that the committee will be taking up stronger forms of protest if the demand is not considered favourably. Several leaders including general secretary, Edward Fernandes, Ramachandra Suvarna and Ramdas Bantwal addressed the gathering.
The representatives of the organizations also submitted a memorandum addressed to the deputy commissioner through the tahsildar, to suspend ongoing work on a mobile tower being constructed by private owners near SVS educational institutions here.
