Mangaluru, Mar 6: World Kidney Day is a global health awareness campaign focusing on the importance of Kidneys and reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems. Kidney disorders run the gamut from minor infections to total kidney failure.
Dr Anand Venugopal Medical Superintendent stated that “KMC Hospitals Mangalore started the Department of Nephrology with the joining of Dr Sushanth Kumar after he completed his training from Bangalore in the year 2002, the department was further strengthened with the joining of Dr Ashok Bhat in 2004 & Dr Mayoor Prabhu in 2012. The Hospital has state-of-the-art dialysis machine with RO treated water facility – being the largest dialysis centre in the city. The Hospital is well equipped to treat all types Kidney disorders. The Nephro-Urology team has successfully performed many Kidney Transplant surgeries over the years."

Dr Ashok Bhat, Consultant Nephrologist, KMC Hospitals Mangalore stated that “World Kidney Day is celebrated on the 2nd Thursday of March every year with an objective to increase awareness among general public that kidney diseases are common and increasing in incidence and to promote early detection of chronic kidney disease and institute measures to prevent kidney failure”
Dr Sushanth Kumar B, Chief Consultant, Nephrology Department stressed on the prevention measures of chronic kidney diseases, which includes: exercise, control of diabetes mellitus, control of hypertension, diet, avoid NSAID’s, adequate water intake, look for Chronic Kidney disease in Diabetes / Hypertension/ other high risk people, quit smoking etc.
Dr Mayoor Prabhu, Consultant Nephrologist stated that World Kidney Day is an initiative of International Society of Nephrology (ISN) on 2nd Thursday of March every year. In addition to the chronic problems related to kidneys already stressed, it is important to consider acute and preventable causes of kidney failure like severe dehydration, pain killer abuse, intake of unsafe and uncertified native medications, infectious diseases etc. It is important for the general public to be aware of these facts and to recognize possible kidney disease early.
