688 primary schools in Karnataka sans students!

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Feb 24: Believe it or not, as many as 688 primary schools in different parts of Karnataka have no students at all.

So, is the huge investment on building infrastructure like school buildings and other sanitation facilities, playgrounds, teachers and staff salaries etc by the State Government a big drain on the infrastructure?

Not just that, according to official data, over 9,500 government schools in the State have 20 or less number of students studying them.

Of the 688 schools with zero number of students include lower primary and upper primary classes, 535 are government schools, 138 unaided and 15 aided ones.

One wonders whether the growing trend for having smaller families with one or two children due to rising financial costs and the popularity of family control measures or the popularity of private and English medium schools is the reason for this zero and less number of students in most schools.

The growing trend of zero or very low enrolment of students in schools is certainly a matter of concern as Karnataka is known for its large of High Schools, Pre-University and Degree colleges as well as Engineering, Medical and Nursing Colleges, which may face reduced clamour for seats in the years to come.

As of now, many Engineering Colleges, Industrial Training Institutes and Polytechnics have been facing less number of students with many courses finding no takers.

Apparently, the time has come for the Government as well as managements of private educational institutions to cut down costs and perhaps combine courses. The State Government too needs to examine its policy of investing in the education sector and concentrate more on improving the facilities in the existing institutions.

hello everyone,it is not the medium of instruction, kannada or english, it is the attitude of general public & talent of teachers & students and ultimately devine intervention that makes the destiny of a person.. that is what i feel..

i studied in kannada medium school of a remote village with population of less than 1500 upto SSLC. now i am double post graduate & working in a reputed company in India. it was my primary & high school teachers who gave inspiration to study & to get a gob & make a livelihood as my father did not had any land or property. today i am in good position, even after studying in a remote village in Kannada medium, it is because of teachers.
then what is the problem now ?

the school were i studied was spoiled by SDMC. yes politics has spoiled the schools. my madam was totally into teaching, the present headmaster is into real estate.

talent / interests were the criteria for progress. now students should not be failed upto 7th standard. homework not allowed.

small punishment to student makes as sexual harasment / child abuse. so children are immune from any discipline. they are more bothered about cricket / politics than doing useful work.

money / caste /gender are the criteria for ion of candidate for teachers post in aided & govt schools. obviously what you can expect from these candidates?

unwritten dress code was there for teachers, todays teachers dress code... "govindaaa" students had to respect teachers in the past, now political interference in school matters by panchayath members makes teachers life miserable. that is why govt school children are becoming graduates who will not fit into any corporate / private jobs & how many govt jobs can be created ? i have typist in my office, who is MA ( English), but can not write one single sentence without mistake. if there is no exam, no failure up to 7th standard, this is what will happen. na ghar ka, na ghat ka...who want to send child to govt school...

ALL THESE MESS IS BECAUSE OF GOVT. RESERVATIONS FOR TEACHING STAFF.
IF GOVT.COMPROMISE ON QUALITY OF EDUCATION IN THE NAME OF RESERVATIONS FOR TEACHING STAFF THIS WILL BE THE FATE. THERE ARE INSTANCES OF GOVT. TEACHERS RELATIVES ARE STUDYING IN ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOLS FOR THE SAME REASON.
THE GOVT. BENEFITS WILL NOT REACH SCHOOLS FULLY BUT TO THE POCKETS OF BUREAUCRATS IN THE NAME OF SCHOOLS.

Dear people, stop criticizing and down grading Kannada Medium schools, majority of people who educated in Kannada medium schools have come up in life the hard way and achieved a lot, majority of people who educated in Kannada medium schools have achieved great academic results either in Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate or post Doctorate degrees in Literature, Science, Medical, Engineering, Finance, Management etc, list goes on, they have excelled in their profession in India and abroad and work in top positions. Best example is late Sir Dr. M. Vishweshwaraya.
It is a wrong thinking that by sending our sons & daughters to English medium school, only they will excel in life, is a wrong attitude.
We meet lots of Kannadigas living abroad and working as utives, Doctors and other respective professions, all had their early education till high school in Kannada medium school.
688 primary schools in various parts of Karnataka have no students at all, is because parents think by sending their children to Kannada medium school they have no future, they are wrong, send your child to Kannada medium school, they will work hard and excel as they move on to PUC & Degree courses, whats needed is not medium of instruction, but hard work, learning method, dedication, using the skills to achieve higher grades in subjects especially in PUC, and choose a profession and do a degree relevant to that profession.
If you have financial difficulties, send them to Govt schools, nothing wrong in it, if student works hard, there are free scholarships for future education, there are several scholarships offered by foreign educational institutions for poor students.
We all did our initial education in Kannada medium schools, we have achieved, where there's will, there's way. Please encourage your children to educate in Kannada medium schools.

Previous BJP Government & Present Congress Government is opposing to introduce English Medium for Primary Classes.Once I asked our house keeping staff, where she is sending her children for Schooling. She said to English Medium school. When I questioned to her she said I don't want my children to do house keeping work. I fail to understand when a poor lady knows the importance of studying in English medium, why our politicians opposing for it. Because of this arrogant nature of our politicians, our primary schools r facing these shortage of students. But who cares.Politicians will send notes to English medium schools to admit their, their relative's & their friend's children to admit them in their school. Most Hypocrite politicians of our Country.

Most of the parents irrespective of their affluence level want to send their children to English-medium school nowadays. The government’s plan to convert schools to English Medium is being opposed by some people and same people admit their children in convents and ask the general public to learn Kannada.
There is mad rush for the admission to English-medium schools and the Kannada schools are on the verge of closure because of dearth of students. PLEASE DO NOT OPPOSE government’s plan of introducing English Medium schools.
