Karkala, Feb 17: Late night on Sunday February 15, a bison had fallen into the well belonging to Xavier Rebello from Majalakody Belman Itameri in the taluk. The well in question is located inside the plantation of Rebello, and connected to pump set.
On Monday morning, locals and forest officials together succeeded in rescuing the animal and releasing it into the forest.
When Rebello went to his plantation for irrigating the trees and plantations on Monday, he saw that bison had fallen into the well and got trapped there. He immediately contacted local leaders, who in turn, sounded the range forest office in Karkala.
It was evident that the bison had struggled to come out of the well, but had not succeeded. Exhausted from the effort, it was lying quietly in water. The forest officials who reached the spot summoned a JCB, with the help of which, mud near the well was moved aside to make it convenient for the animal to scale the wall easily, and come out.
The bison came out, and started to eat grass nearby, without showing any aggressive behaviour towards the people gathered there. Those at the spot saw that the animal had turned weaker, having been injured in one leg because of getting stuck in a trap sometime back. It was therefore, limping. On account of weakness, the bison was finding it hard to move, and efforts to drive it into the forest proved futile. Then the people tethered it to a tree nearby.
Thereafter, veterinarian, Sunil Nayak's services were utilized to treat the wounds of the bison. The doctor removed a piece of cable that had got into its leg and applied bandage. After the treatment, it was released into the forest area near Bola village.
Range forest officer, Prakash, some other forest officials, and locals were involved with the operation.
