Mangaluru, Feb 7: The Ullal police have arrested two brothers for allegedly raping a minor girl twice in two months. One of the accused was caught by the public, thrashed and then handed over to the police.
The police arrested accused Basheer (35) and his brother Rashid (34) and charged them with rape, issuing death threats and under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
It is learnt that on December 26, 2014, Basheer barged into the 14-year-old's house while her mother was out and she was alone. Claiming that he was in love with her, he took her into a room and allegedly raped her. He also threatened to kill her if she revealed the incident to anyone.
A month later, on January 25, Basheer's brother Rashid went to the same girl's house when she was alone, and allegedly raped her. He too threatened to kill her, it is learnt. Frightened by the threats, the girl remained silent.
However, both the accused had also developed contact with the girl through mobile phone, and that is how the incident came to light. The parents of the girl, seeing her talking on the phone, inquired, upon which she told them about the brothers.
The parents decided to take matters into their own hands, and asked their daughter to call the brothers by phone and tell them to come to a hotel at Thokkottu. The hotel is said to be owned by the brothers. When Basheer reached there, the parents along with the locals caught and thrashed him, before handing him over to Ullal police.
Though intially the issue was settled through compromise, the girl revealed the rape incidents during further questioning. Accordingly, the Ullal police arrested the brothers and booked them under sections 448 (tresspassing), 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and under POCSO Act.
Among the brothers, Basheer is married twice, and separated from both wives.
