Mangaluru,Jan 29: In connection with the robbery which took place at Kunil Complex at Ganapati High School Road in the city on January 25 this year, the police personnel of the city crime branch have succeeded in arresting two persons. The arrested have been named as main accused in the crime. The police recovered Rs 7,880 from them in cash, apart from two cellphones.
The arrested men are Junaid alias Mohammed Junaid (22), residing in Ansari Road, Bunder here, and Mohammed Rafiq (30), resident of Azaria Apartments here.
In a complaint filed in the Bunder police station here, Fairoze Ahmed had said that he was in the company of his friend, Rajesh, in Kunil Complex here on January 25 when a five-member gang attacked them, kept both of them in illegal confinement from 3.30 pm to 9 pm that day, and robbed their belongings. Cash in the possession of Fairoze Ahmed was snatched away, and his ATM card was robbed. A total sum of Rs 1,01,000 was withdrawan by using ATM card, and a cheque belonging to Fairoz was got signed by him after filling up the amount as Rs 75,000, the complainant had alleged. As per the complaint filed on January 26, the police had registered the case.
After getting reliable information about the presence of the accused, city crime branch inspector, Valentine D'Souza, and his staff took both the accused into custody on January 28, and handed them over to Bunder police station. Police are searching for the remaining three culprits.
The policemen found during preliminary questioning that the accused are addicted to drinking, and they resorted to robbery to put together money for buying liquor. It is learnt that Junaid already is facing a complaint of stealing items from Mataji Sanitary located within Bunder station limits here.
