Bengaluru, Jan 25: Dharmadhikari of Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Dr D Veerendra Heggade and T V Mohandas Pai are two among the seven persons from Karnataka chosen for the prestigious Padma Awards.
The Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian honours of the country, were announced on Sunday January 25. The awards comprise Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards.
Dr Heggade has been chosen for the Padma Vibhushan award for his contribution to the field of social work.
T V Mohandas Pai, chairman of Manipal Global Education has been chosen for Padma Shri in the trade and industry category. Apart from him, S Arunan, Vasant Shastri and S K Shivkumar, all from Karnataka, will also get Padma Shri for their contribution to science and engineering.
The other awardees from Karnataka are Sri Shivakumara Swamiji of Shree Siddaganga Math in Tumkur (others) and Dr Kharag Singh Valdiya (science and engineering), both of whom have been chosen for Padma Bhushan.
Speaking to media persons at Dharmasthala, Dr Heggade expressed happiness on being chosen for the award but added that it has increased his responsibilities.
"People of Dharmasthala and other places have come in large numbers to congratulate me. Fourteen years ago, in the year 2000, I had been chosen for the Padma Bhushan award. Since then, several welfare programmes have been initiated and successfully executed. I believe that this accomplishment has caught the attention of the government," Dr Heggade said.
"I have always felt happy on receiving awards, but it never made me proud. Awards increase one's responsibilities. It brings happiness because over 20,000 people are working hard in various institutions (run by Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala) and serving Shree Manjunatha Swamy. They have brought name to Dharmasthala. Hence they too share the honour of getting this award," he said.
Apart from Dr Heggade, BJP leader L K Advani, actors Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan and Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal are among the nine awarded India's second highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan.
Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates and his wife Melinda, journalists Swapan Dasgupta and Rajat Sharma, lawyer Harish Salve, filmmaker Jahnu Barua, former chief election commissioner NGopalaswami, wrestler-turned-coach Satpal, and maths "Nobel Prize" winner Manjul Bhargava are among the 20 recipients of the Padma Bhushan, said a home ministry release.
The Padma Shri has been awarded to 75 people.
