Now farmers to get high tech with free tablets

Bengaluru, Jan 25 (DHNS): The State government on Saturday launched tablet computers designed specially for farmers. Information about agriculture will be available on the device in Kannada and English.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Information Technology and Biotechnology Minister S R Patil distributed the tablets to select farmers from Bagalkot and Vijayapura districts.

The device, named ‘Namma Raitha’ tablet, will be given to farmers’ clubs in the two districts in the days to come. Up to 50 farmers can open accounts in each tablet. Free Internet facility will be available for the first three months and later users will have to subscribe. Each tablet costs about Rs 10,000, sources in the government said.

The tablets have been developed by non-resident Indian software professionals associated with the non-profit, eKissan Foundation. Biocon Foundation, Infosys Foundation and other NGOs are also associated with the initiative, according to a press release from the government.

A dedicated call centre will answer farmers’ questions on agriculture. Besides, information on weather, soil, pesticides, crop patterns, government loan schemes for farmers, etc will be available on the tablet.

Patil said it was the first time that such a technological help had been extended to farmers anywhere in India. Every farmers’ club of 15-20 members in nearly 1,500 villages will get a tablet free of charge.

Gouri Shankar, Trustee, eKissan Foundation, said, “Being born in a farmers’ family in Bagalkot, I have seen and experienced what challenges farmers face. After spending a decade in the US and seeing global trends, I believe access to relevant and timely information will help farmers.”

So true. Everytime I see such news I cringe. We spent 10's of thousands on Akash...blan blah blah...no result. Now this. Totally bothched up. I am sure the call center will be shut after some time. After 3 months free period the farmers will not want to but internet. Finally some politician, an agent and deal maker looted and made some big bucks. That the end of the story.

I really love the idea Couple of apps can be installed In Calgary we have gas buddy app which tells nearest gas station, gas price and distance.

It would be great idea for farmers to have bar buddy app which can tell farmers nearest bars by distance and rates as well not a bad idea.

Mr. Shekar, who are you to decide whether farmers are qualified to operate a tablet? Do you have a pre-conceived notion that all farmers are illiterate? I know people who have studied post graduation in scientific agriculture and horticulture and have settled back in their native villages and have taken up innovative farming techniques. I know you will question me saying if they have money to study abroad, why cant they afford a tablet. Mr. Shekar, there are old farmers who have been educated by mobile training vans on scientific advances of farming. And some farmers are pretty good at implementing this, regardless of the limited education they received. When cell phones first came to India, people with similar mentality ad you sitting abroad asked the same question, whether Indians are qualified to operate a mobile phone. But we mastered the art, didnt we? A 2 year old kid, who cant read or right knows more about cellphones than you and me. Its not about qualification, its about interest. And im sure the farmers, our nation's pride, can operate that tablet with ease if properly trained. Else, his son or daughter will teach him, the same way they taught him to operate a mobile phone.

Hypocrite Bhakts have a problem with each and everything that Congress does in the state.

While their own bjp aka brasht janata parivar was in power they destroyed everything and now they have an allergy if Congress does any thing which is constructive.

It is ridiculous move. Now farmers to get high tech with free tablets-what is the use of it?Are they well qualified to operate it?or it is another kind of scam by the government in the name of tablets to loot the state and favouring some influential bureaucrats."Ek Haath me Dena hai,Doosra Haath me Lena".Wah! what a wonderful idea.If they were given free modern machineries like tillers,harvesters,water-pumps etc and other modern agricultural equipments, would have been much better step than distributing free tablets. What is the frequency of consuming tablets in a day? One morning and one at the night before sleep after food?If they take this tablets and consume, definitely they get loose motion, dysentry immediately.Wonderful idea by the government."Konada Munde Kinnari Baarisidante".like blowing flute in front of the buffalo. This is nothing but Sheer vote-bank politics.Carry on,carry on but for how many days.Open some schools and better give them some lecture on agriculture/cultivation rather than distributing tablets so that they can improve their yield/production.This tablets will one day go into the dustbin for quite sure.

    Dear Siddhu
We grow Paddy, Coffee and a bit Areca. Your free tablets will not help us to increase our yield. Free or subsidized Fertilizer, Interest free loans will definitely. Thanks to your 1 Rs Rice Scheme we all have extreme shortage of labors, employing migrant laborers is not affordable nor its safe. Please do not waste public money for another useless scheme, instead come out with a schemes that would really help farmers and promote agriculture than selling our fertile fields to real estate.
