Udupi, Jan 24: Justice Shivashanker B Amaranna of Udupi district and sessions court on Saturday January 24 sentenced Sudheer Devadiga (24), an accused in an attempt to murder case, to four years of imprisonment.
Sudheer had teased school girls at a shop belonging to Prakash Acharya and run by Ananda, situated at Vishwa Building, Moodabettu Adamaru in Bada village, Udupi taluk, on October 28, 2011. When Anand objected to this, there was a heated exchange of words between Sudheer and Anand. Sudheer had come forward to kill Anand and in a fit of rage, had swung a soda bottle kept on a tray outside the shop at Anand. When Anand managed to duck it, Sudheer removed a knife from his pocket and stabbed Anand in the stomach. When Anand tried to defend himself, he was injured on his hand.
When Anand escaped again, Sudheer tried to explode a gas cylinder kept in front of the shop. At this, Anand ran into a nearby room belonging to one Mustafa. Sudheer then broke the window panes of the room and caused a loss of Rs 400.
Police sub-inspector Mahadeva Shetty of Padubidri police station prepared a first information report (FIR), conducted the investigation, and submitted a chargesheet in court.
The court, after questioning the witnesses, convicted the accused under Section 307 and Secction 427 of the IPC. Sudheer was sentenced to four years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 and six months of imprisonment and Rs 1,000 fine for causing loss. The period of judicial custody will be deducted from the sentence.
