Mangaluru becomes malaria capital of Karnataka

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jan 23: It is not good news for Mangaluru and Dakshina Kannada. A shocking data regarding Dakshina Kannada has been revealed now. The contribution of the district in the total Malaria cases reported in Karnataka is a whopping 57 percent, and 88 percent of these cases are reported in Mangaluru city alone.

This was revealed by Dr Prakash, state nodal officer related to malaria control, in a meeting presided over by deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim here on Thursday January 22.

Out of the 14,569 malaria cases reported in the state, 8,240 cases were reported in Dakshina Kannada and 1,639 cases in Udupi district in 2014. This gives them the shares of 57 percent and 11 percent respectively in the state.

Percentage of Malaria cases in Dakshina Kannada in the past:

Year - Percentage

2006 - 21%
2007 - 18%
2008 - 13%
2009 - 16%
2010 - 16%
2011 - 26%
2012 - 38%
2013 - 43%
2014 - 57%

As many as 7,313 malaria cases were reported in Mangaluru city and 880 cases were reported from other parts of the district in 2014.

Mangaluru taluk - 485, Bantwal taluk - 194, Beltangady taluk - 82, Puttur taluk - 105, Sulla taluk 14 are the taluk-wise figures.

Two confirmed malaria related deaths took place in the district in 2014. As many as 17 deaths were suspected to have occurred due to malaria.

Dr Prakash said special preference will be given to the coastal districts in future in controlling malaria.

Migrant workers

Malaria is more prevalent among the migrant workers from Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Odisha and also from other states. These workers are mainly involved in construction work. Dr Prakash advised that more measures should be taken at the construction sites to control the spread of malaria.

DC calls for action

Deputy commissioner asked the officers if a district like Bagalkote can contain malaria, why Mangaluru was lagging behind. He then instructed the departments concerned to come with a game plan to contain the same within ten days after internal consultations. The meeting took note of suggestions given by social workers like Suresh Shetty and Joseph D’Souza.

District health officer Dr Ramakrishna Rao, Udupi district family health officer Dr Ramachandra Bayary, MCC commissioner Hephziba Korlapati and Dr Rajeshwari from Wenlock hospital were present in the meeting.

I live in Attavar ward. For the past 3 or four years I never seen municipal workers fogging. A boy frequents the area with a cylinder of pesticides but seens he is on a joy walk. Goes up and down and writes the door nos in his small note book. When questioned his answer is just a laugh and says if you want to complain to the health department, go and do so. The ward corporator just sleeping showing his face only during election. Is there is any answer from Health dept.?

Please note: Mr Udaya Kumar from Dubai is suggesting that Health Minister should take action to prevent Malaria in Educated City. Myself with other Residents live next to a Property Owned by Health Minister & Family. Since last 12 years we have requested this family to clean their property but still not. Hotel drainage was flowing on ground in property. Drilled a hole to the side of septic tank and let water to property. It was like bucket with hole which never fills up.
Mr.Khader's P A Vijaya came to my house and saw the mess and promised to clean. Seven months passed and every week He told me that He will get it done following week. Unfortunately,He did not say which following week of which Year.
    1. City Mayor did nothing after requesting with Him at least 6 times. Even Ex Mayor Rajni Dugganna visited the spot with then commissioner and did nothing.
2 Requested Health Officer Manjaya Shetty at least 25 times, still not done. I have given the photos of the site and still little has been done.
    3. Local Corporator visited the spot many times. End result was like beating a dead horse to move.
ONLY Evening Daily exposed the problem Property with headline title reading" U T Khader Kutumba Jageyelli Kasada Raasi" Thanks to them. With this article Property was cleaned partially. Now again the same problem
These same people who are barking Malaria,Dengue and Cholers.
Number one building in City is MCC,
number one Malaria Breeder spot also is MCC Compound. Just visit the compound behind the MCC near Canteen area and near Commercial Complex.
Let us pray that New Commissioner will stand tough. I know She will.

What so many hospitals around and with so many doctors passing o9ur of colleges... hope this menace will be controlled. That apart it is expedient that teams of social workers go round the City and ensure that garbage is not thrown about and that are no puddles and water around the areas and more articulatory areas with new buildings coming up.

Make Mangaluru city clean to prevent Malaria and any other kind of deceases. In the city every where garbage, solid waste and any unwanted items thrown openly. DK administration has to make covered garbage collection arrangements so that mosquitoes does not take shelter. Maintain city clean.

Dear Health Minister, as Mangaluru is classified as a Smart City Please take quick action to maintain cleanliness in the city. Drainage system should be well maintained. Open drainages are to be taken care of and weekly spraying of insecticides is to be done. Strict action to be taken against the Hoteliers, petty shops who are violating health and safety rules. Builders should take utmost care in construction site to maintain cleanliness.Medicines should be sprayed daily. Health dept should appoint inspectors to check the construction site daily.By these measures 90 percent of malaria cases can be controlled.

Come and visit Kottara Chowki and Bangra Kulur area. Every week 3 to 4 days we can see drainage water flowing in a channel meant for flow of rainy water. Thousands of people leaving in this area and around 2000 students(from Mahesh P U college)studying nearby.
Drainage water is released from drainage treatment plant (located at Kottara Chowki) without treating it.
    Who is responsible for this?

Mangalore has struck with various diseases. First Malaria, next Aaadhaar card, no electricity. I don't think this kind of situation does exit any other state like Karnataka. We have MP's and other bunch of jokers, only interested in cutting ribbons and show smiling face to the camera. ( Ramanath Rai). We feed them to serve us. But In the end they help themselves. Every kind of disease can be eliminated if the govt. bodies work towards it.

It's an alarming data released n am sure it is true. Major reasons being : all building sights have migrant workers n water used n being stagnant at these sites is place for malaria mosquito breeding.
all buildings under constructions, have a look at their living conditions, shacks they live, water they use, it is all beyond our imagination. This contributes also to Malaria.
Personal hygienic conditions of all working class people yet again at construction sites, hotels, local markets etc. Unless we target these areas in society, we can never be rid of Malaria in Mangalore.
Let us not wait to hear Mangalore name as " Capital of Malaria in India ."

    Keep your sorrounding clean.
There is an ABCD for prevention of malaria. This is:

    •Awareness of risk of malaria.
    •Bite prevention.
•Antimalarial medication - Chemoprophylaxis(taking antimalarial medication exactly as prescribed).
    •Prompt Diagnosis and treatment.
Always drink purified water and main thing is to keep your sorroundings clean

No doubt Malaria is a sure gift for anyone visiting Mangluru if he fails to take adequate precautions, a proven malaria endemic area!!

The actual figures might be much more as many treated by pvt. physicians are not reported!!

A year back I was down with malaria twice in a span of four months while in Mangluru!! On a casual talk with the physician, he told me on an average he gets at least 2 cases in the morning and 2 in the evening each and every day of the year!!

The cerebral variant and mixed variants have a high mortality rate even if caught in the early stages!! Jai Mangluru!!
