Mangaluru, Dec 31: Police personnel from Pandeshwar station here have succeeded in arresting a person in connection with theft of cash and other valuables from Milagres Church here sometime back. The arrested person is reported to be an inter-state thief named Alex (29) alias Soorya, residing at Jayapriya Apartments in Magadi Road in Sunkadakatte, Bengaluru.
It is said that Alex has confessed to his crime. He was taken into custody from near the second railway bridge in Mahakalipadpu in the city on Tuesday December 30. Two cellphones, worth Rs 19,875 and Rs 20,000, were recovered from him.
The accused allegedly entered Milagres church office by cutting open window rods on July 23 this year. He forced open the drawers of a table there, and took away cash amounting to Rs 1,22,800, a gold chain worth Rs 25,000, and a Nokia cell phone worth Rs 22,000. Fr George Sunil D'Souza had filed a police complaint relating to this theft.
Police inspector of Pandeshwar station, Dinakar Shetty, who was on rounds, noticced that youth had started running after seeing the police vehicle near the second railway bridge in Mahakalipadpu. He asked the police personnel to chase him. On being caught and questioned, the policemen recovered cellphones and a hacksaw blade in his possession. A detailed interrogation revealed that he keeps visiting different places for a living, and that he had in the past stolen cash and valuables from Milagres church.
The policemen found that Alex faces theft cases in J P Nagar and Madiwala police stations in Bengaluru, apart from a case in Ernakulam Central police station in Kerala. In some cases, he also underwent punishment in the past, it is gathered. The policemen, who produced the accused in the court said they will apply for his custody to extract more details.
The team which nabbed Alex included crime department police sub-inspector, Anant Murdeshwar, apart from inspector, Dinakar Shetty, and other police personnel.
