Mangalore, Dec 9: St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor held its very first graduation day in the open air stadium of the college on Saturday, Decmber 9 evening for the first batch of Engineering who passed out of the college this year.

Director of University Grants Commission's regional office Dr Manju Singh was chief guest on the occasion. Bishop Aloysius D'Souza of Mangalore presided over the function. NITK Suratkal registra Dr Aloysius Sequeira, Mumbai's Printania Offset proprietor Albert W D'Souza, St Aloysius College dean Prof Edmund Frank, former SJEC principal Dr Sudhakar Shetty, vicar general Msgr Fred V Pereira and Edwin Pereira were guests of honour on the dais. SJEC director Fr Valerian D'Souza was also present.

Principal Dr R K Yaji welcomed the gathering. Dr Manju Singh in her speech spoke of the importance of principles as well and the service motive and pursuit of excellence in one's career in the present competitive world. She also stressed on how healthcare and other education would compete with the rest of the world by 2020.

Lecturer Jayakar Hegde of the college administered the oath to the new graduates. In all 146 students received their certificates from the guests on the dais.

The following were gold medallists among the college's first graduates:

Computer Science: Kavita S

Electronics and Communications: Manjushree Kamath

Electrical and Electronics: Rashmi

Mechanical Engineering; Wilson Pinto

The college registered 96.5% result in its maiden batch.

Carol Lobo proposed a vote of thanks. The function was compered by Neeti Serra.
