Puttur, Dec 27: The rural police here said they have succeeded in identifying the body that had been found on the night of December 25 at Kapikad in Kaikara, Volamogru village near Kumbra. They said that the deceased was Neelayya Gowda (35) from Mundala House in Sanyasiggude in Kedambadi village.
It is said that many had seen him moving about in his village on the evening of December 24. As per police assessment, Gowda was killed by stabbing with a sharp instrument. His body was found on December 25. The way injuries were inflicted enabled police to conclude that he was murdered.
Neelayya, it is learnt, was a drunkard. Some people whom he knew well, made him drink liquor in excessive quantities before bringing him to Kapikad. They left after murdering him, the police have concluded. Some locals suspect that Neelayya Gowda was killed as he was a police informant, a claim which has not yet been either confirmed or rejected by the police.
The deceased is survived by wife, a son, and a daughter.
There are allegations that Neelayya used to intimidate people to shell out money by threatening them with police action, it is stated. Some say he usually threatened those involved with cockfight, gambling, illegal sale of liquor etc of passing on information to the police. It is said that the police have, during their preliminary inquiries, found that he was murdered relating to these cases.
District superintendent of police, Dr S D Sharanappa, visited the spot on December 25 night after getting to know about the recovery of the body, and guided the investigations. Local deputy superintendent of police, Bhaskar Rai, town police inspector, B K Manjaiah, and others too visited the spot. Postmortem of the body was guided by Dr P S Hegde of forensic science laboratory. Sniffer dogs were also summoned to the spot.
