Puttur, Dec 27: The rural police here said they have succeeded in identifying the body that had been found on the night of December 25 at Kapikad in Kaikara, Volamogru village near Kumbra. They said that the deceased was Neelayya Gowda (35) from Mundala House in Sanyasiggude in Kedambadi village.

It is said that many had seen him moving about in his village on the evening of December 24. As per police assessment, Gowda was killed by stabbing with a sharp instrument. His body was found on December 25. The way injuries were inflicted enabled police to conclude that he was murdered.

Neelayya, it is learnt, was a drunkard. Some people whom he knew well, made him drink liquor in excessive quantities before bringing him to Kapikad. They left after murdering him, the police have concluded. Some locals suspect that Neelayya Gowda was killed as he was a police informant, a claim which has not yet been either confirmed or rejected by the police.

The deceased is survived by wife, a son, and a daughter.

There are allegations that Neelayya used to intimidate people to shell out money by threatening them with police action, it is stated. Becoming a Police informant in India is a very dangerous job. Because there are some corrupt Police personnel at all Police Stations who reveal the identity of such informants to the Criminals. And the Criminals always take revenge on such informants. It is said that in India atleast 1000 such police informants are murdered every year.

His core intention to intidimate anti social elements for personal gains put him at risk rather than doing it discreetly by hiding his identity may have saved his life from anti social elements. Literally "kill the snake without breaking the stick" if we need to fight wisely with good intention.

It is paramount duty of every citizen to report to the police any illegal activity they see ie- gambling, murder robbery assault rape extortion, bullying ect. This way the society is safe where the public does not have to worry for their families. But when the police have to rely on informers, it speaks of a society living in fear and the goondas are in charge. I am sure if the administration is given the the trust, our police are capable of maintaining the status quo.

Sad end. Whatever he was whether a Police Informant or not - no one has a right to judge him and what is worse is that the cruel people murdered him.

Hope the police will trace the culprits and that they will be booked.
