Udupi, Dec 25: Based on a tip-off from a right wing activist, the police on Thursday December 25 seized a Maruti Omni that was allegedly being used to transport beef illegally. The police also found illegal sandalwood in the vehicle. The incident occured near Kota Hiremahalingeshwara Temple.
The police arrested a person identified as Abdul, who had come to buy the beef, but the persons in the Omni managed to escape.
Sources said that the Omni was being used to transport beef from Kadlur to Udupi. An activist of a right wing outfit who was near the Temple noticed some business activity going on in the Omni, and growing suspicious, went towards the vehicle to find out. It is learnt that Abdul had come there in his two-wheeler to buy beef. The right wing activist immediately informed the police.
The police rushed to the spot. However, on seeing the police, two persons who were in the Omni escaped. On inspecting the Omni, the police found over 50 kg of beef, and also more than 5 kg of sandalwood blocks concealed under the beef. The police also found beef stocked in the two-wheeler's storage compartment.
Kota police have registered a case and taken Abdul into custody. The Omni, beef, sandalwood and Abdul's two-wheeler have been seized by the police.
