Kasargod, Dec 23: In an incident which occurred in the town on Monday December 22 night, a Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) activist was hacked to death by a gang armed with sharp weapons.
The deceased has been identified as Zainul Abid (24) from Talangare Kunnil.
The incident occurred at around 9.30 pm. Abid was about to leave his father's shop in Chakkar Bazaar here for home, when a gang suddenly stormed into the shop and attacked him. Hearing Abid's shouts for help, some shopkeepers nearby went there running. However, by then the gang had finished its task and escaped in darkness, it is said.
The seriously injured and bleeding Abid was immediately taken to a private hospital in the town. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru. However, efforts put in by doctors to save him failed, and Abid passed away in the early hours on Tuesday.
The mortal remains were then shifted to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital. The policemen have now begun looking for suspected killers of Abid. Additional police forces have been deployed in strategic places in the town to ensure that the incident does not cause further trouble in the form of revenge.
SDPI has given call for district bandh on Tuesday December 23 from 6 am to 6 pm in protest against the murder.
