Udupi, Dec 19: About two-and-a-half months after a mysterious loud sound created anxiety among the locals, and five months after a crack developed on the earth's surface, Manchikere near Manipal on Friday December 19 once again experienced tremours resulting in fissures on the surface of the earth.

The incident was reported in the premises of a house rented by Shambu Kunder. The house belongs to Jagadish.

It is said on Friday morning, Kunder experienced mild tremours, and noticed cracks around the well in the premises of the house. Large chunks of stones had come off the surface.

Inside the well too, the tremours created cracks all across the wall and left a deep fissure on its parapet. The well has no water.

Kunder immediately informed house owner Jagadish, who in turn called Sudhir Nayak, PA of MLA Pramod Madhwaraj. Sudhir Nayak informed Udupi tahsildar Guruprasad who came and inspected the spot.

The tahsildar asked Kunder to vacate the place for the next three days for his safert, and said that alternate arrangements will be made for his stay. In the meantime, experts would come and study the area, he said.

As the news spread, curious locals gathered at the spot in big numbers.

Geologists and experts inspected the area later. Speaking to reporters, senior geologist Niranjan said that Manchikere had experienced a mild tremour. "This is an earthquake prone zone. Six months ago, when there was a similar occurence of fissure in this area, we had appealed to the DC in writing to not allow construction along Malpe-Agumbe route. We will again meet the DC and stress on it," he said.
