Udupi, Dec 17: In a shocking incident, a man allegedly killed his lover before committing suicide.
The incident took place at Padubidri here late night on Tuesday December 16, and came to light on Wednesday December 17.
The deceased have been identified as Naveen Devadiga (40), son of Deju Devadiga, a resident of Nadsalukeri, Padubidri, and Tara Devadiga (38), daughter of Kariya Devadiga, a resident near Buntara Bhavan, Padubidri.
It is said that Naveen Devadiga took Tara Devadiga to an old building opposite Corporation Bank, and stabbed and strangulated her. He then hanged himself at the same spot, it is learnt.
Sources said that Naveen, a tempo driver, and Tara, an employee in a supermarket, were in love and used to often meet each other.
A small knife and Tara's purse found near the spot. Naveen's mobile phone and a death note were found in Naveen's pockets.
It is learnt that Naveen and Tara were old lovers who got married to different persons. After Tara's marriage, Naveen fell in love with a lady named Shobha Devadiga from Moodushedde, Mangaluru and married her with their families' consent. They have sons aged 18 and 14 years.
However, on learning about Naveen's affair with Tara, and because of his chronic alcoholism, Shobha left him and returned to Moodushedde, taking with her their children. Presently, she is employed in a foreign country.
Meanwhile, Tara had married Raju Devadiga from Nandalike and they were blessed with two children who are now aged 14 and 10 years. Tara worked in a supermarket. Her husband Raju died about two years ago due to illness.
After Shobha left Naveen and Raju died, Naveen and Tara met again and their blossomed once more. Tara even reportedly asked him to marry her. Locals said that the lovers would meet on a daily basis.
Sources said that last week, Naveen had met Tara's parents at her house and asked her hand in marriage, but her parents refused and told him to distance himself from their daughter.
On Wednesday morning, the locals found the two bodies behind an old building opposite Corporation Bank, and informed the police.
The police found stab injuries on Tara's neck while Naveen was found hanging.
Death Note
The death note found in Naveen's pocket runs for two pages. In it, he described the course of events of his life right from his birth, and particularly since 1991 when he and Tara first fell in love, their separation, marriages, and their reunion. He also stated that he killed Tara and committed suicide.
However, towards the end of the death note, he hinted that Tara might have done something that deeply hurt him. "Women should never be trusted. They will do anything for money. This should be a lesson to all," Naveen stated in the death note.
SP Rajendra Prasad, DySP Santosh Kumar, ASP Annamalai, Kaup police inspector Lakshman and other police personnel arrived at the spot and investigated. The bodies were later handed over to the respective families.
Padubidri police have registered a case.
