Kasargod: Rs 50 crore-fraud accused escapes from police lock-up

Kasargod, Dec 13: A person who had been taken into custody by the local police escaped from police lock-up in the early hours on Friday December 12. He had been arrested on the allegation of defrauding people by promising them to get interest-free loans through a bank, and collecting gold ornaments from them. The amount of fraud is totally estimated to be worth about Rs 50 crore.

Jalaluddin (30) from Malappuram Kondoti, made good his escape at around 3 am on Friday when no policemen were around. It is learnt that because of scarcity of personnel, no policemen had been present near the lock-up. Jalaluddin made use of this opportunity and slipped out by opening the gate of the lock-up.

It is said that the gate of the lock-up was not locked. Jalaluddin was involved with several cases of fraud, it is learnt. The police came to know about his escape after several hours since he ran away.

A person named Mustafa from Kallitodi Malappuram had committed suicide two months back, after having been duped by Jalaluddin. While investigating this case, the policemen got to the root of the issue, and learnt about the wrong deeds of Jalaluddin. The police said Jalaluddin faces several cases of cheating, abetment to suicide etc. He used to promise people to get interest-free loans from Islamic Bank,it is said.

It is said that Jalaluddin had obtained old gold ornaments from a jewellery shop here sometime back, but cheated the owner of the jewellery shop by not making payment for the same. Based on a complaint filed by the jeweller, Jalaluddin was arrested.

The policemen have now been making efforts to nab him again. They have passed information to all the police stations, seeking their help in arresting the accused.
