Beltangady, Dec 11: Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police (SP), Dr Sharanappa, warned those who use social websites for spreading rumours aimed at vitiating social atmosphere, and those who spread rumours through other modes, of stern steps. He was addressing a press conference at the police station here on Wednesday December 10.
The SP sought cooperation for his department towards regulating crime from the general public. 'Taking law into hand is an unpardonable offence. Committing a crime to tackle another crime is utter stupidity. If the names of the same persons come up in repeated offences, such people will be covered under Goonda Act,' he warned. He also asked the people to check the veracity of any rumours by calling the local police stations before acting upon them.
Referring to cattle trafficking incident at Belalu, the SP said that stealing of cows is a crime. He hastened to add that beating up the theft-accused is also another crime, duly clarifying that cases have been filed against both sides and arrests have been made. He also requested leaders to refrain from inciting innocent people to commit offences. He also clarified that investigation is under way relating to the incident in which stones were pelted at Kanyadi mosque.
Assistant SP, Rahul, police circle inspector, Lingappa Poojary, and Punjalakatte police sub-inspector, Latesh Kumar, were present.
