Mangaluru, Dec 10: A person was attacked near Krishnapura, Suratkal, on Tuesday December 9 night, spreading tension in the area. As a result of this incident, panic spread and people gathered at several strategic spots. The police resorted to caning to disperse the crowds for controlling the situation.
Arif (30), a resident of Krishnapura 4th block, was walking towards his home after alighting from a bus at around 8.30 pm on Tuesday, when three persons riding a motor bike swung sharp weapons at him, and escaped after inflicting serious injuries. Additional police personnel had been deployed in the area after the Ulaibettu disturbances.
Immediately after the police came to know about the attack, they conducted operations the same night, and took into custody an accused who reportedly was involved with the attack from Madhya village near Suratkal.
Soon after the news of attack on youth spread, people started gathering at Katipalla, Chokkabettu etc. Additional forces were rushed to the spot, and police caned the crowds to disperse them. Leaders from various social fields also came on the scene and helped the police in maintaining law and order.
After the incident got wide publicity through social media and rumours, people came out of their houses and formed crowds at Chokkabettu, Krishnapura, Katipalla, Ganeshpura etc. A team led by police commissioner, R Hitendra, reached he area. The team succeeded in sending the people back to their homes in some places by convincing them to do so, whereas in some others, they had to resort to caning.
It is learnt that Arif was not keeping good health. Hitendra said that he will camp in Suratkal to ensure that such incidents do not recur. He also said that the situation is in control, duly adding that the situation would be monitored closely, and if necessary, section 144 would be clamped. As police personnel in sufficient numbers has been deployed everywhere, it is felt that law and order situation will not worsen.
